Ask Ye What Great Thing I Know

A Hymn Devotional

Ask ye what great thing I know
That delights and stirs me so
What the high reward I win?
Whose the name I glory in?
Jesus Christ, the crucified.

This text was written almost 300 years ago, but what a great testimony, even today. Wouldn't it be great if we carried a disposition that invited others to come up and ask, "Hey, what's up with you? You look great! How do you do it?"

The answer, simply stated: "Jesus Christ, the crucified."

It is easy to get caught up in the stress of work, the stress at home, the little things that nag at us, and the big things (at least they seem big at the time) that preoccupy our thoughts. And yet, aren't we fortunate that we have an answer, that we have a Savior?

Who defeats my fiercest foes?
Who consoles my saddest woes?
Who revives my fainting heart
Healing all its hidden smart?
Jesus Christ, the crucified.

For if God is with us, who can stand against us?
Who would dare? The fact is, if we believe what we say we believe, then we really should glow with the love of Christ, and the confidence of his grace and mercy.

Can we really say, "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil."? Not always; it's hard for there is plenty to fear. But we don't have to fear. Jesus has already paid the price for us. He has already won the fight.

Who is life in life to me?
Who the death of death will be?
Who will place me on his right,
With the countless hosts of light?
Jesus Christ, the crucified.

Dear Father,

Thank you for the amazing gift of your only son. Help us to daily appreciate, that is to understand the victory that is ours because of this special gift. Help us to walk with such a confidence inspired by your love and grace that people who see us will ask us, and we will reply "
Ask ye what great thing I know? Jesus Christ, the crucified."

Amen.
