A Hymn Devotional

All the saints adore thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
Which was, and is, and evermore will be.

In the great, eternal celebration of praise and worship, angels and saints have the benefit of seeing God and his all-encompassing glory. We are not yet as fortunate, for we can not behold his full glory. While we are blessed with an eternal spirit, we are still confined to our earthly minds, earthly eyes, and earthly senses. We see, we hear, we touch, we smell, we taste, but none of these senses bring God tangibly closer to us.

Though the darkness hide thee,
Though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see;
Only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
Perfect in power, in love, and purity.

Yet we do possess another sense, an indescribable, probably underdeveloped ability that gives us glimpses of the infinite power and love of our gracious, merciful God. God is seen in our music, our hope, our children, our love for one another. We see God in the infinite universe, and in the incredible minute details of our own bodies. We are easily touched by stories of goodness, triumph and virtue, and saddened, even angered by stories of hurt and injustice. There is order in our universe, designed by the master architect. Beyond our earthly vision and earthly hearing, we still see the majesty of God and hear the majestic songs of praise and creation. From this unearthly ability, we know this: God is. As surely as if our earthly eyes had seen him in the flesh.

Dear Father,

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea;

And we hear the praise and see the works, not with our earthly senses, but with our heavenly senses which are just as real. Help us to hone these senses so that we may become ever more aware of your presence in our everyday lives. From the unconditional love of our children, to the infinite majesty and detail of your amazing creation, thank you for the glimpses of your glory. We long for the days when we too can cast down our golden crowns around the glassy sea, and fall down before you in thanks and praise.

Amen.
